When to book your newborn photo session

· Updated · By Marina Aleksandrova

The question I hear most from expecting parents is “when should I book?” The short answer: book during your pregnancy, ideally by 30 to 34 weeks, for a session when your baby is 5 to 14 days old. Here’s why, and how booking with me works.

Why the first two weeks matter

In their first days babies sleep deeply and still curl up the way they did in the womb. That is what makes the sleepy, curled-up poses possible, and it is the only time you can capture those tiny fingers, toes and eyelashes at their very smallest.

After about two weeks most babies are awake for longer and less happy to be gently posed. Older newborns are still very welcome. Their photos simply look a little different, with more open eyes and more natural, awake moments.

Why book before your baby arrives

The ideal window is only around ten days long, so there is very little room to move the date. Once your baby is here, the last thing you will want to do is search for a photographer, compare prices and wait for replies.

Booking during pregnancy means it is all arranged before life gets busy. When your baby arrives, you send me one message.

Your newborn session timeline

  • 20 to 30 weeks: look through galleries, choose a photographer and pick a package.
  • 30 to 34 weeks: send me your due date. I hold a spot around it, with no payment needed until your baby arrives.
  • Baby arrives: message me any time, even from the hospital. The sooner I hear from you, the easier it is to arrange a slot that suits you, ideally between day 5 and day 14.
  • Session day: come to my home studio in West Wickham with your baby, a feed, spare nappies, muslins and a dummy if you use one. Outfits, wraps, headbands and props are all provided.

What if my baby comes early or late?

Due dates are only an estimate, so the hold is around your due date rather than a fixed day. If your baby arrives early, late, or you both need a little more time to recover, we simply plan the session for when you are ready.

Already had your baby?

It is not too late. Get in touch with your baby’s age and I will check the next available dates. The sooner, the sleepier!

How long is a session and what does it cost?

Sessions are calm and baby-led, with breaks for feeds and cuddles whenever needed. They last 1 to 2 hours for the Bronze package and 2 to 4 hours for Silver and Gold, which include photos with parents (and siblings with Gold). Packages start at £250; see the full newborn photography prices.

Ready to book? Send me your due date and I will check availability.
